Struggle is uncomfortable. Struggle is dealing with unforeseen challenges. Struggle is outside our comfort zone.
Most people avoid struggle. We all look for ways to be efficient. We want to rely on our natural talents. We want to be brilliant and useful and smart in that first minute. We want to deliver a great solution right then and there. When we do that however, we choose not to learn. We choose the easy way. We avoid the challenge and we avoid the difficult path to the right solution.
And here’s the other thing - people love hearing stories about other’s challenges. The audience seeks out stories of perseverance and struggle. There are industries built on this. There are movements. David vs Goliath? Terry Fox? Heck, even Apple. Struggle is part of the myth, it’s part of the allure of these stories. Those stories resonate with people - they connect.
So it’s worth finding the struggle - it’s worth actually looking for it. Instead of avoiding it, embrace it and power through it. Solving the problems one at a time as they come your way. Working through the difficulties. The struggle will lead to something new. Something unexpected. At the end of it, you’ll have learned something. And, better yet, you’ll likely have a story to tell. It might be worth the struggle just for the story alone.
